The song is a powerful <strong>environmentalist<\/strong> anthem denouncing the <strong>destruction of nature<\/strong> caused by <strong>modernization<\/strong> and <strong>building speculation<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-paragraph\">Through simple but effective imagery, such as the iconic verse <em>&#8220;They paved paradise and put up a parking lot,&#8221;<\/em> the song highlights the <strong>loss of green spaces<\/strong> and their replacement with urban infrastructure. The transformation of a paradise landscape into a parking lot expresses concern about<strong>human impact on the environment<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-paragraph\">The song also refers to <strong>pesticide<\/strong> use (&#8220;<em>Hey farmer, farmer, put away that DDT now<\/em>&#8220;), criticizing the impact of<strong>industrial agriculture<\/strong> on the<strong>ecosystem<\/strong>. The symbol of the &#8220;<strong>big yellow cab<\/strong>&#8221; represents modern society that, with its progress, drives away and takes away what is <strong>natural<\/strong> and valuable, giving the song both a social and emotional dimension. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-paragraph\">The refrain, <em>&#8220;Don&#8217;t it always seem to go that you don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;ve got &#8217;til it&#8217;s gone,&#8221;<\/em> has become a veritable <strong>mantra<\/strong> calling for reflection on the importance of protecting the environment.
