The Circle of Life<\/strong>, originally composed by Elton John <\/em>with later contributions from Lebo M<\/em> for the lyrics, is a classic Disney soundtrack that most of us are familiar with. The song introduces the iconic scene from The Lion King<\/em> in which Rafiki introduces Simba<\/strong>, Mufasa’s infant son, to the animals at the King’s Rock. <\/p>\n\n

Lions are generally considered the “kings of the jungle”<\/strong> or savannah, as they represent the top of the food chain.<\/strong> However, Circle of Life <\/em>presents a more nuanced and interconnected worldview<\/strong> that moves away from hierarchical thinking and instead emphasizes the cyclical nature of life<\/strong>. As Rafiki says later in the film, ” When we die, our bodies become grass and antelopes eat grass. And so we are all connected in the great circle of life <\/em>“. This quote embodies the core of circular thinking<\/strong>: even the king, in death, returns to the earth and re-enters the ecological cycle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The decision to use this song in such a crucial scene is both intentional and impactful. The opening line, “Nants ingonyama bagithi baba<\/em>,” which translates to “Here comes a lion, father<\/em>,” is spoken in Zulu. Its style is reminiscent of the Nguni praise poem<\/strong>, a tradition often used to announce kings and leaders at important events. In this case, the lion’s arrival is a moment of renewal for the community<\/strong>, marking its place in the continuous cycle of leadership, death, and rebirth<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

This scene also echoes African traditions<\/strong> in which infants are presented to the natural elements such as the sun or rain<\/strong>, as a way of presenting them to both the ancestors and the environment. Returning to Rafiki’s earlier metaphor, the presence of all the animals at Simba’s presentation symbolizes not only the living members of the ecosystem, but also the graves of the ancestors, who have returned to the earth, nurtured the grass and thus remain present in the cycle of regeneration<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

In conclusion, the addition of the Zulu language introduction gives the song an unforgettable power. It serves as a symbol of both cultural power and resistance<\/strong>, especially poignant given its release in 1994<\/strong>, the year apartheid ended in South Africa. <\/p>\n\n

Combining ecological interconnectedness, respect for ancestors, and cultural symbolism<\/strong>, The Circle of Life <\/em>becomes an accessible and profound way to introduce children, and adults, to the basic principles of the circular economy<\/strong>: interdependence, regeneration, and nonlinearity of systems.<\/p>\n\n
