The Circular Marine Food System model, developed in the late 1960s by economist Kenneth E. Boulding, represents a set of project actions with which we can help strengthen a more sustainable seafood-related agribusiness system.

The circular agribusiness model makes it possible to correct the distortions and imperfections of the current agribusiness industrial model, turning problems and waste into new employment opportunities. Experts from the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS) have repeatedly said that the current model is tied to a rigidly linear logic that does not work, and a shift to the Circular Food System would generate enormous benefits for the environment, the sea and consumers. Developing and strengthening technological innovations and scientific research would make it possible to significantly reduce waste in the fish and agribusiness supply chain, representing a revolution in environmental protection, the sea and in combating food waste.

Numerous startups and innovative companies are focusing on the Circular Marine Food System to explore and raise awareness of different types of materials and products that use waste found in the sea, such as nylon from fishing nets, or the reuse of waste from fish production and mussel farming. “Analyzing production processes around the world in seafood, we find numerous virtuous examples of sustainable economics,” Roberto Minerdo, president of the National Observatory for the Protection of the Sea (ONTM), explains. “I will mention here a few such as the one initiated by Callipo Conserve Alimentari, a Calabrian company that has been in the fish preservation business for more than 100 years, which with the collaboration of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria has activated a project to valorize tuna processing waste, including sewage sludge, and transform it into high value-added Omega-3 products, bioenergy and organic fertilizers.”

“Also of interest,” Minerdo continues, “is an experiment initiated with the Agri-fish project. Coordinated by the University of Camerino, in collaboration with the Algerian University of Tiaret, the University of Valencia and CNR-IRBIM in Ancona, it aims to produce innovative feeds for use in aquaculture activities using waste products mainly from organic farming. Or again, the research of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Salento, which, dealing with the important issue of waste related to fishing activities, is developing solutions for the reuse of mussel shells and shrimp carapaces, thus converting waste materials into products with high added value.” Entrepreneurial creativity and scientific research, in short, can become concrete pathways for the enhancement and promotion of circular economy policies for fish chain operators.

From mussel scraps to nests for migratory birds

One extremely interesting project is the one initiated by the nonprofit Medsea Foundation with the company Nieddittas, which has created an artificial islet in Sardinia from mussel waste. An extremely unique and eye-catching project involving the reuse of mussel shells for the construction of artificial islets at the Corru Mannu pond in order to support the settlement and nesting of a number of bird species . The Corru Mannu pond, within which the Nieddittas facilities are located, enjoys an extremely favorable location and international significance for nesting, wintering and migration of important migratory aquatic and seabird species. An area with very low anthropogenic disturbance, which has the necessary characteristics to promote safe nesting and support seabird settlement. The islet consists of 2,000 burlap sacks filled with mussel shells from the processing of Nieddittas, placed manually through the aid of a boat and the in-water support of several divers who coordinated the placement activities. During 2023, the first specimens of the migratory species settled the area, and a monitoring plan has been prepared that will verify the functionality of the islet and the possibility of placing additional suitable nesting elements.

Renewable energy from posidonia

In the municipality of Pollica, in the Cilento National Park, work is under way to establish Europe’s first renewable energy plant powered by the endemic Mediterranean marine vegetation that reaches the beaches: beached posidonia. A 7,000-ton-per-year posidonia biodigester, capable of meeting the electricity needs of 500 households, is the project launched by the small Cilento municipality. The biodigester is located within a nature trail frequented by many tourists. In addition to covering the local community’s energy consumption, the aim is also to produce energy for the city’s sewage treatment plant, whose role in the posidonia treatment process is crucial.

To minimize strand loss, beached posidonia needs to be cleaned of marine litter and sand. It then undergoes a washing process that uses non-potable water or reuses water used for washing boats or water from irrigation. “The environmental benefit is obvious, because reducing the production of methane from fossil sources is a goal we should all strive for,” said Miras Energia CEO Silvio Petrone. The Salerno-based startup, Miras Energia, which is based in Eboli and is engaged in the field of project development for the implementation of clean energy and energy efficiency, developed the new project together with the community, institutions and associations active in the municipality of Pollica.

Together with a remaining portion of organic fraction of municipal solid waste, the posidonia is processed into biomethane. The processing methodology is that of anaerobic digestion: as with other biomass, in the total absence of oxygen, with bacteria and microorganisms, the posidonia delivered to the plant is transformed into methane (60 percent) and other gaseous substances. “Pollica has a recycling collection rate that exceeds 80 percent,” explains Stefano Pisani, mayor of the municipality of Pollica. “The hamlet of Acciaroli becomes the site of an energy plant that does not impact the territory, in terms of size and scope, and that will allow us, once the constructive role of posidonia, which is essential for mitigating coastal erosion during storm surges, has been exhausted, to produce energy in full autonomy, together with neighboring coastal municipalities, helping us to build a true energy community. Our citizens will have electricity supply at a lower cost and substantial relief in waste disposal costs.”

Innovation, cooperation and dissemination for a sustainable fish supply chain

The many critical issues facing fish production and marine ecosystems can be addressed through technological innovation and innovative processes related to the sustainability of the fish supply chain. “We can rewrite the industry,” Professor Alberto Felici, director of the Master’s degree program in management of coastal aquatic areas and resources at the University of Camerino, explains. “Through an undoubted and now imminent reshaping of the fishing effort and to a drastic reduction in pollution, through an imminent support to the quality of production, an increase in dialogue at all territorial levels between fish operators and other social partners, and to meet the needs of consumers in terms of food safety and healthiness of products, recovering the favor of consumers, who today approach the products of this sector with distrust also because of alarmist news about the healthiness of fish products. Underlying everything is equally necessary the proper and rapid sharing of scientific information and data as well as their dissemination.”

“Of particular topical interest is thecircular economy of fishery resources, known as the Circular Marine Food System, whose use for human consumption must take into account the need to avoid waste and thus the importance of reusing waste,” stresses Roberto Natali, founder and scientific director of the Ab Aqua Center for Hydrostrategic Studies. “With this in mind, the use of fish processing residues for the production of jellies, pet food, flours and, particularly from shellfish waste, even biodegradable packaging material should be enhanced. It’s about respect for the sea and its bounty, reducing the waste of seafood, which is increasingly valuable, in which regard legislation should also be strengthened and knowledge of new practices spread.”

Thinking of the Blue Economy in a circular way involves a renewal of the sector itself, which, through research, the introduction of technological innovations and cooperation with the various “blue” economic chains, makes it possible to develop new employment prospects while respecting the sea and its ecosystems.

Carbon
