Gianluca Castellini is CEO of Smurfit Kappa Italia. I meet Castellini in Pastrengo, in the province of Verona, where Smurfit Kappa Italia&#8217;s Experience Centre is based. An eagerly awaited meeting because this is where the future of packaging for the entire food system can be read. You visit it and discover the impact it has at every stage of the supply chain, all the way to the buyer and the end consumer. Designers, engineers, marketing experts engaged daily in developing ever-innovative solutions to meet every need. For each product, be it bottles, chocolates, fruits and vegetables, pasta, boxes, displays, the Center provides all the study and design tools that enable it to develop the best solutions available on the market. And everything is shown to the client first: digital printing, virtual store, structural analysis, saving analysis, ISTA testing, these are just some of the tools, software and services with which the final result of each project is previewed. All of this follows the company&#8217;s commitment to sustainability summarized by the Better Planet Packaging project, aimed at creating a new future of sustainable packaging through the reduction of waste generated by packaging including through the elimination of plastic that too often ends up in our oceans and landfills around the world.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You quickly understand that here paper and paper-only packaging is a serious, drastic, no-return decision. Castellini explains why: &#8220;Packaging has never been more important than in recent years. And its importance is bound to increase. It is because it protects everything we consume, and determines along with other factors its value. It is also an extremely effective marketing element in defining the sustainability of products and how they are disposed of. We are aware of the importance of our work, which is why we always offer innovative and &#8220;tailor-made&#8221; solutions. We do this by first investing in single-materiality because packaging-once its use function is over-becomes waste, and we must do everything we can to differentiate it as best we can and recover it for other uses. Using only paper has less impact on the environment and helps the recycling industry. And then paper is beautiful, a technologically advanced material that enables solutions that were unthinkable until a few years ago. Another concrete commitment of ours is the reduction in terms of packaging volume. We can take care of the products and protect them by using much less raw material. And a decrease in packaging volume decreases costs throughout the supply chain.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solutions that improve the environment. Such as the Safe&amp;Green\u00ae trays made in the factories of Orsenigo in Lombardy, Capocolle di Bertinoro in Emilia Romagna, and Lunata in Tuscany. They are made entirely of corrugated cardboard,-the circular material par excellence-biodegradable, but also highly durable. And safe because it is certified according to the strictest regulations inherent in food products. Safe&amp;Green\u00ae is a concrete example of the Better Planet Packaging project, launched by Smurfit Kappa to encourage the replacement of high-impact packaging and materials with environmentally friendly solutions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;All our products, such as the Safe&amp;Green\u00ae range, respond to our corporate identity and mission summarized in three key actions: create, protect and cherish. This means that, in addition to making sustainable packaging solutions that deliver on their promises whatever the challenge set by our customers, we protect products, even the most delicate ones, along with natural resources, and strive to ensure that through our activities and those of our partners we can increasingly reduce our environmental impact.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create, protect, cherish, three verbs that in these rooms become art, a creative process, a constant exercise in sustainability, a concrete application of the principle that things can always be done better using less matter, but increasing performance, usability and safety.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paper packaging thus becomes continuous improvement of the relationship between business, products, consumption and environmental sustainability. Through Better Planet 2050, the company has set itself a series of ambitious sustainability goals in several areas to further reduce its impact. In fact, it was the first company among the FTSE100 to be awarded 5 stars for making the UN&#8217;s 2030 Sustainability Goals (SDGs) a concrete reality. Achievements in 2020 include a 41.3 percent reduction in CO2 emissions caused by fossil fuels compared to 2005 and a 29.2 percent decrease in waste sent to landfills compared to 2013.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smurfit Kappa Italy is part of the multinational, is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is part of the FTSE100, one of the leading manufacturers of paper-based packaging and display solutions, n. 1 in Europe. Worldwide, it has 48,000 employees, more than 355 factories located in 36 countries and a turnover of more than 10 billion euros in 2021 and 65 thousand customers. As of January 2022, Smurfit Kappa Italy has been certified as a Top Employer company for the third consecutive year, and at the end of May, all Italian factories obtained ISO 45001 certification related to occupational health and safety.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rising paper prices and energy costs affect the company&#8217;s profit and loss accounts in no small measure. Again, however, a kind of circular foresight is partially mitigating the effects of the energy crisis. With an integrated production process, converting plants can source most of their raw materials from Group-owned mills, ensuring optimal performance and service. From the FSC-certified (responsible and sustainable management) owned forests to the production of paper that is used in the mills to make corrugated sheets and boxes, to the collection of recycled paper and cardboard that becomes raw material again and is thus fed back into the production cycle. A true example of a &#8220;circular economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smurfit Kappa in Italy operates 26 plants &#8211; 10 integrated mills, 4 box plants, 2 corrugated board sheet manufacturers, 2 paper mills, 1 plant dedicated to recycling, and 7 special products plants -, has 2,200 employees and a turnover of about 700 million euros.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Matteo Mochi Where we see packaging, we actually discover the future of the circular food economy.
