This video illustrates how TexFad, a social enterprise based in Uganda, applies circular economy principles by converting banana stalk waste, a byproduct that is usually burned or left to rot, into sustainable, value-added products such as rugs, placemats, and hair extensions.
Uganda produces about 9 million tons of bananas per year, generating twice as much organic waste. Traditionally, this waste contributes to environmental pollution, mainly through burning, which releases carbon emissions. TexFad’s approach not only diverts this biomass waste from landfills and air pollution, but also reusesit to produce biodegradable fibers thatrequire minimal water and land compared to cotton or silk.
The process involves cutting and drying the stems, extracting the fibers using a specialized machine (the only mechanized step), and then hand drying, dyeing, and weaving the fabrics. This model is an example of resource efficiency, waste valorization, and sustainable material innovation, which are fundamental principles of a circular economy.
In addition to materials recovery, TexFad supports social inclusion and economic regeneration by employing 23 people and offering internships to students, many of whom have difficulty finding jobs after graduation. The enterprise not only creates green jobs, but also promotes skills development in hand weaving and textile crafts, bringing back traditional East African motifs through modern applications.
Although infrastructure and equipment costs, such as fiber extractors that cost between $1,000 and $10,000, are obstacles to scalability, founder Kimani Muturi remains optimistic about the future. He envisions that banana fiber will become a global alternative to conventional fabrics if investment is made in research and development and affordable machinery.
Although composting banana stalks for fertilizer is another viable and common solution, TexFad’s innovation demonstrates how removing waste from the system and extending the life cycle of materials can align environmental sustainability with community development and entrepreneurship, pillars of the circular economy framework.
