Patrick Vernuccio, known online as “The Frenchie Gardener,” is a French author, facilitator, and content creator on the topic ofurban gardening. He, through social profiles, shares his deep passion for growing food in small urban spaces, educating more than 1.5 million gardening enthusiasts.Patrick incites people to rediscover contact with nature in order to recreate an essential connection with food, seasons and biodiversity.
Born and raised in France, Vernuccio lived between Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin-all urban areas-he never had a so-called “green thumb,” nor much training and education about the world of nature, except for a few notions learned during weekends spent in the countryside at his grandparents’, where he learned to appreciate fresh, tasty, organic food. Everything changed when, at the age of 36, he was persuaded to buy some plants to beautify the terrace of his apartment in Amsterdam and, despite his initial fear that he had no aptitude or sufficient expertise in gardening, he decided to buy some vegetable seeds, pots and soil: the satisfaction was so great in seeing, a few weeks later, his seedlings growing lushly, that Patrick decided to continue cultivating – in the true sense of the word – this hobby. In fact, after working for some time in the marketing world for companies such as PlayStation and Netflix, he finally decided to pursue his passion forurban gardening, even making it a job.
Through his content on social platforms, The Frenchie Gardener wants to show all gardening enthusiasts how it is possible-as well as extremely simple-to sustainably grow food even in small urban spaces such as terraces. He, in fact, has transformed his 18-square-meter balcony into a “green jungle,” a real ecosystem in which different varieties of seasonal fruits and vegetables planted in small containers and pots coexist. Patrick also writes for gardening magazines, shows tips and practical tutorials on social networks , and, having undertaken a certified design course in permaculture, integrates these techniques into his approach tourban gardening. He emphasizes that permaculture is not just a gardening technique, but more importantly a philosophy that promotes biodiversity and incites a more regenerative and sustainable urban lifestyle, encouraging us to reflect on our daily choices and the environmental impact of our actions.
Vernuccio, then, promotes urban regeneration through conscious and sustainable gardening practices, but that’s not all, as he incorporates circular economy principles into his daily routine: he employs recycled materials to construct pots and containers and harnesses the nutrients contained in food scraps, dried leaves and uncoated paper to make zero-waste home composting. Through activities such as rainwater harvesting, minimizing water consumption and creating habitats for pollinating insects, Patrick then teaches the importance of conducting sustainable agricultural practices that serve as a support to the local economy. Finally, in order to preserve biodiversity and ensure that seeds can be harvested, Patrick engages in the organic cultivation-that is, without the use of fertilizers and pesticides-of native and non-hybridized plants.
Vernuccio then explains that urban gardening is a viable option, as well as a viable solution, to be able to grow food in small spaces, also reporting evidence of how the activity itself offers countless therapeutic benefits, allowing those who practice it to reconnect with nature. He also emphasizes the importance of being patient when gardening, pointing out that the processes that occur in the field follow nature’s own rhythms and that the plants themselves need constant attention and care. Ultimately, The Frenchie Gardener wants to spread the message that: “One’s own organic food is completely possible and accessible because, yes, we all have a green thumb, we just need to learn some simple basics” (Vernuccio, n.d.).
