Scenario
At a time when sustainability is often associated only with the environment, it is crucial to remember the value of social sustainability.
For more than four decades, the Community of San Patrignano has been a reference point in Italy for the recovery and rehabilitation of people with addiction problems, offering an integrated model of inclusion, training and personal rebirth.
Over the years, the Cooperative has developed numerous social and production projects, including “WeFree,” dedicated to addiction prevention, and a shop of artisanal gastronomic products made within the community, without preservatives or artificial additives.
This production choice reflects a holistic approach to food sustainability, combining ethics, health and respect for nature. In 2012, thanks to the “GSE – Energy for the Social” project, San Patrignano also installed three photovoltaic systems, reducing CO₂ emissions by about 30 tons per year.
Underlying each activity is the desire to rebuild an authentic connection with the land: working in agriculture and animal husbandry thus becomes an integral part of personal growth and reintegration into the world of work.
Description
Founded in 1978 in Emilia-Romagna, the San Patrignano Community takes in people with addiction problems free of charge, offering them a path to recovery based on reintegration into work, training and psychological support.
Production activities range from viticulture and animal husbandry to artisanal processing of cured meats, cheeses and wines, sold through an ethical and sustainable shop. Each product represents not only a source of income, but also a symbol of hope and rebirth and an educational and personal redemption tool that can restore dignity and professional skills.
Agricultural and farming processes enable community members to establish a relationship with the land, gaining scientific knowledge and becoming familiar with nature. Direct contact with nature and caring for natural capital help community members regain balance, responsibility and trust.
At the same time, San Patrignano promotes quality agricultural and artisan training, creating concrete job opportunities and contributing to the social regeneration of rural areas.
Today, the community is recognized as a virtuous model of a regenerative economy, where work becomes a vehicle for inclusion, sustainability and collective well-being, providing new opportunities for people in need.
