Altrefiamme is an innovative startup operating in the field of digitization in the supply chain of woody biomass and related combustion equipment: from the forest to atmospheric emissions through combustion, including “gastronomic wood” and opera wood. Achieving the goal involves the use of innovative technologies: IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Big Data, Data Analytics and Cloud in a sector that, to date, has not yet benefited the most from digital transformation.
It is a meeting platform where operators and producers of agroforestry fuels, manufacturers of appliances that transform biomass into energy and heat (furnaces, stoves, boilers, thermo-fireplaces), institutions, universities, and public and private research organizations interact.
Altrefiamme is being developed with a series of digital initiatives, chief among them the development of a dedicated portal covering four areas in order of importance:
- Sensorization and digitization services of flues and combustion appliances to monitor their parameters of use, efficiency, emissions and wear. All with the aim of achieving economic benefits for all involved, optimizing performance, maintenance time and, thanks to the control of pollutant emissions, ensuring compliance with regulations and therefore the environment.
- A blockchain-certified traceability woody biomass marketplace that ensures quality, safety and legality in the wood supply chain. A marketplace that then enables the introduction of new development models related to carbon credits and thus to CO2 reduction and capture in the wood supply chain.
- eLearning: an online professional training platform equipped with strong multimedia of courses that are recorded in the studio by a team of industry professionals. The modules are then characterized by a high degree of interactivity designed to make it as easy and simple as possible for practitioners to learn in both compulsory and specialized courses.
- Editorial area with news, articles, interviews and multimedia formats on the world of certified wood and good practices for proper use of furnaces and stoves as well as environmental protection.
Research activities and collaborations
Altrefiamme develops its project with a scientific approach and a strong focus on sustainability and the circular economy of agrifood supply chains. Confirmation of this are the ongoing collaborations with Universities and Research Institutes, starting with the survey commissioned to the Sensory Analysis Laboratory and the Food Lab of the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo on the use of gastronomic wood or the research on “Development Scenarios Enabled by Blockchain Technologies” commissioned to the Blockchain & Distributed Ledger Observatory of the Milan Polytechnic.
This is because digital technologies, blockchain foremost among them, prove to be strong enablers for green due to the traceability and transparency they are able to introduce into production, processing, transportation and delivery processes.
The Altrefiamme marketplace itself, designed, for example, to promote blockchain-tracked products, again from a circular economy perspective, allows olive wood to enter the value chain, which, from being a waste material to be discarded, becomes a valuable resource to be used for cooking food, moreover adding valuable organoleptic value to food.
And again with a view to continued growth, we then find additional research projects in the offing: the first on the relationship between the agrifood sector and digital technologies and the other on enhancing the aromas and flavors of meat with respect to the wood used for cooking.
