Rino Gaetano in his most iconic single, “Ma il cielo è sempre più blu,” shows a general overview of theItaly of his era. The seemingly innocuous situations described in the lyrics, repeated cyclically and without a logical thread at first reading, actually conceal a denunciation of the injustices and inequalities in this contradictory society. There are clear references of political criticism “Who leaves for Beirut, who has a billion in his pocket,” and for the phrase “Who throws the bomb and who hides his hand” he was even censored and had to modify the text in order not to be excluded from radio circuits.
The focus of the song, however, is not these situations described, but the refrain that also gives the song its title: “But the sky is always bluer.” With each stanza in this one line, the whole message that Rino Gaetano wants to express is loaded: the world goes on anyway and the sky doesn’t give a damn about human affairs.
Building on this warning, one can make an interpretation related to sustainability as well. Society now as then, in right and wrong, has a purely anthropocentric view. The paradigms that come into being guide man’s actions and goals, and in the lyrics of the song they can be seen as pensions and wages for example; abstract ideas with no connection to objective nature, which will exist even after humankind.
