Type: Docufilm
The docufilm makes people reflect on the wastefulness of the food system in North America, amounting to 50 percent of the food produced, from the farm, to retail, to their own refrigerator. On the other hand, it discusses the difficulty of 10% of the population in meeting their daily energy needs and the billions of dollars thrown away each year on discarded food.
Jen Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin demonstrate that they can live only with the leftovers of production characterized by waste. A six-month collection of expired or near-expiration food, damaged or mislabeled produce, and fresh items discarded for defects or for shapes and sizes that do not meet sales standards is documented.
During this time, by eating perfectly good food from what was available instead of what they wanted, without doing any shopping, they gained a few pounds and saved about twenty thousand dollars. Finally, some food activists are interviewed who point out the unnecessary motivations for food waste, which are often aesthetic and economic.
