FoodWize is an innovative project born in Bangalore, India, that uses gastronomy as a tool for social and environmental change. Founded by Priya Joshi, Srijata Sengupta and Priya Bala, FoodWize connects chefs, local producers and consumers to educate about more conscious food choices based on seasonality, waste reduction and short supply chains.
The project is very active online, particularly on Instagram (@foodwize.in), where it features photos and videos of seasonal Indian dishes, recipes related to local traditions, insights into the value of small-scale producers, mini-documentaries on biodiversity, interactive quizzes on purchasing habits and food waste, as well as testimonials from farmers and chefs working toward a sustainable food system.
This content combines visual storytelling and outreach, inviting those who follow the page to reflect on their daily choices.
Alongside the digital activity, FoodWize organizes thematic “Pop-Up with a Purpose” pop-ups: experiential lunches that become moments of discovery of local ingredients, regional Indian cuisines, and environmentally friendly practices. Themes range from “eating in season and zero waste” to learning about different varieties of rice or highlighting South Indian traditions. The project also offers workshops and educational meetings, aimed at students, businesses and communities, to explore the link between food production, planetary health and social justice.
Through this combination of social media, events, and education, FoodWize shows that local and conscious food can change the food system. So the project has become a positive example for many urban realities. In addition, this vision led to a collaboration with theUniversity of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo to develop Sthira, a research track dedicated to food sustainability in the Indian context.
