Favela Organica is a project born in the favela of Babylon, Rio de Janeiro, founded by Regina Tchelly, a Brazilian cook and activist. The main goal is to combat food waste by promoting a sustainable cuisine that uses food scraps normally thrown away, transforming them into nutritious and creative dishes. This approach not only reduces waste, but also creates an inclusive food model that is accessible to the entire community.
The project is based on three basic pillars: the valorization of food leftovers, the spread of composting practices, and the creation of urban gardens in favelas. Through sustainable cooking workshops, Regina Tchelly teaches how to transform fruit peels, leaves and other scraps into healthy recipes, giving new life to what would otherwise be discarded.
Favela Organica demonstrates how it is possible to create a circular food economy system within marginalized communities, improving food security and strengthening the social link between producers, consumers and the environment. The project has had a significant impact in reducing waste in favela families, fostering a culture of respect for food and the planet.
Founder Regina Tchelly has also pursued this initiative through television programs and collaborations with schools, thus amplifying the message of sustainability. Favela Organica’s practical experience is a concrete example of how urban agriculture, responsible consumption and social innovation can coexist to build a more just and sustainable future.
