The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is one of the most influential organizations globally in promoting thecircular economy. Founded in 2010 by British yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur, the foundation works with businesses, institutions and the scientific community to transform the way we produce and consume. The goal is clear: to move from a linear system of “take, produce, throw away” to a circular system in which materials are reused, regenerated and returned to nature.
Through its social profiles, the foundation tells stories of innovation and change in the various systems created by the company. Content ranges from in-depth blogs to long videos to reels and carousels that explain complex concepts in simple language. This approach makes it possible to showcase concrete solutions and raise awareness among a very wide audience: not only insiders, but also consumers, students, and the curious.
A prime example is the reel dedicated to Notpla, a British startup based in London and winner of theEarthshot Prize 2022. Founded in 2014 by Pierre Paslier and with scientific support from chemist Dan Whitaker, Notpla develops packaging and edible materials made from algae and plants that can replace single-use plastic.
In the video, the foundation shows how these innovative solutions work and how they fit into a circular economy model:
- edible bubbles for drinks and condiments, also distributed at sporting events and festivals;
- Biodegradable containers for take-out food;
- Dry powder films and sachets.
At the end of their life cycle, all Notpla materials naturally biodegrade, turning into compost that feeds new algae and plants. It is a concrete example of biomimesis, where observation of nature becomes a source of inspiration to reduce pollution and create truly circular products.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s socials are not just informative. They offer inspiration to anyone who wants to better understand how the circular economy works and learn about real-world case studies: companies innovating, designers experimenting with natural materials, and communities turning waste into resources. Through collaborations, interviews and digital campaigns, the foundation shows that change has already begun and new solutions are already among us.
