The text is constructed as a sequence of questions-the famous “What about…” – that become a collective indictment. It does not simply ask “what about the animals or the whales?” but pushes the listener to come to terms with their own behaviors andindifference to the planet and those who inhabit it.
Musically, Earth Song mixes gospel, symphonic pop, and tribal sounds in a structure that grows in intensity. Jackson’s voice goes from an almost liturgical whisper to a visceral cry, accompanied by powerful choruses that seem to represent the voice of the Earth itself.
The official video clip – shot among felled forests, war-torn villages and drought-ravaged African savannas – makes the song’s message concrete. The images alternate between environmental destruction, human pain and, in the final part, a moment of “healing” in which nature flourishes again and peoples rise up, as if the planet itself finds the strength to fight back.
Rolling Stone called this piece “one of Jackson’s most emotional and risky works” because it focuses on uncomfortable issues far from pure entertainment, turning pop music into an instrument of denunciation.
