“Closing the Loop” is a documentary directed by Graham Ehlers Sheldon and presented by sustainability expert Prof. Dr. Wayne Visser. The film addresses the topic ofcircular economy, offering itself as an informative guide to understanding how to overcome the traditional linear economy model based on “take, produce, throw away” (Sheldon, 2018).
Through interviews with international experts, concrete examples and inspiring stories, the documentary illustrates how the materials cycle can be closed , promoting waste reduction, resource reuse, recycling andsustainable innovation.
First released onEarth Day on April 22, 2018, the film was the world’s first documentary entirely dedicated to the circular economy and, in 2019, was made freely accessible on YouTube with subtitles in 11 languages (closingtheloopfilm, 2018) encouraging its adoption as a training resource in schools, universities, companies and institutions.
“Closing the Loop” is thus shaped not only as a documentary, but as a true educational tool, designed to inform, inspire and mobilize. It is a call to action for citizens, businesses and policy makers to work together in building a more resilient, regenerative and sustainable economic system. In an era marked by climate emergency and environmental degradation, the film offers itself as a concrete guide toward a future in which nothing is wasted, everything is transformed.
