TheUnited Nations Environment Program (UNEP) tells us how, in the years to come, maintaining stable production rates and lifestyles will serve to inject about 180 billion tons of natural resources, or 20 tons per capita per year, into the world’s urban and suburban economic system. Of these, however, about 29 billion tons will be missed (UNEP, 2016). In this regard, it is useful to remember that more than 60 percent of the world’s electronic waste comes from household appliances (UNUniversity, 2021). That is why buying appliances and kitchen utensils that are durable, energy-efficient, and built in a way that can be disassembled and then repaired is a good choice. The initial expense might seem greater, however, in the long run it saves not only money, but also time, possible unintended consequences, and helps reduce resource extraction from the planet by reducing pressure on ecosystems.
