Scenario
In southernIndia, where rapid urbanization has led to increased waste generation and water stress, Auroville stands out as a living laboratory of circular systems (Auroville Foundation, n.d.). Founded in 1968 on barren land, the community has since reforested more than 2,000 acres, now supporting regenerative agriculture, environmentally sustainable building and zero-waste practices (Auroville Earth Institute, n.d.).
India produces more than 3.5 million tons of plastic waste each year, much of which is poorly managed or burned (CPCB, 2024). However, in Auroville,
Whileurban India faces rising landfill emissions and water shortages, Auroville demonstrates a small-scale model of cyclical living, where waste becomes a resource and value is recirculated through repair cafés, shared kitchens and conscious production units. These localized systems also provide green jobs in areas such as eco-construction, sustainable textiles and alternative education.
The Auroville experiment reflects the principles of the circular economy and the 10Rs, offering replicable strategies for resilient urban planning,community empowerment, andclimate adaptation in other areas of the Global South.
Description
Auroville, founded in 1968 as an international city in Tamil Nadu, India, has grown from a degraded, arid plateau to a thriving model of sustainable living and circular economy in action. Inspired by Sri Aurobindo ‘s spiritual vision and led by The Mother, it is now home to more than 3,000 residents from more than 60 nationalities, working together to build a self-sufficient society not based on private property.
Organized under the Auroville Foundation and supported by UNESCO and the Indian government, Auroville operates through a network of units and NGOs active in organic farming, eco-construction, waste upcycling, education, and renewable energy. These units not only support thelocal economy, but also provide vocational training to youth and nearby rural communities.
The city’s infrastructure includes water collection systems, solar energy and biogas, composting, and waste separation, coordinated by services such as the EcoService waste center. An example of circular practice is the

Auroville is also home to several learning and training hubs, such as theAuroville EarthInstitute (sustainable construction with earth), Sadhana Forest (reforestation and water conservation) and the Bamboo Centre (green construction and livelihoods). These hubs offer hands-on learning, internships and volunteering for local and international participants.
At the heart of the project, Auroville demonstrates how circularity, sustainability and human unity can integrate into daily life, offering a regenerative model that can be replicated in both urban and rural settings.
