Electric mobility, increasingly a key player in the green transition, poses crucial challenges for the recycling and disposal of spent batteries, which are set to grow exponentially in the coming years. Apulian startup AraBat proposes an innovative and sustainable answer: a process that recovers valuable materials from lithium-ion batteries using agro-food waste such as orange peels.
Through this technology, AraBat not only promotes acircular economy, but also establishes itself as a model of green innovation, capable of responding to the resource crisis and reducing the environmental impact of recycling. The challenge of electric mobility: environmental opportunities and risks
The growth of electric mobility has triggered a boom in the production of lithium batteries, an essential element for electric vehicles and devices. However, this growth brings with it an emerging problem: the management of spent batteries. According to the latest estimates, by 2040 there will be 9 million tons of spent batteries each year. In Italy, the weight of end-of-life batteries will reach 400 thousand tons by 2050, with disposal costs estimated at more than 11 billion euros.
Current recycling technologies, such as the pyrometallurgical process, require extremely high temperatures and generate heavy pollutant emissions. This is compounded by the economic issue: batteries contain critical materials such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, the value of which is set to soar. By 2025, the market for raw materials recovered from spent batteries will reach $1.137 billion, rising to $23.812 billion by 2040. In this scenario, it is essential to adopt innovative circular economy models that reduce environmental impact and value waste as a resource.
AraBat: extracting valuable materials from batteries in a sustainable way
Founded by five young people from Puglia, AraBat is an evolved example of how innovation and sustainability can not only coexist but bring development. Specializing in the recycling of lithium-ion batteries and WEEE, the startup has developed a technology based on theuse of agro-food waste to extract valuable materials in a sustainable way. AraBat’s awards include theENI Joule for Entrepreneurship Award and theApulian Sustainable Innovation Award, which testify to the positive impact and scalability potential of its innovation.
The team, composed of professionals with expertise in engineering, economics, chemistry and environmental science, is supported by a Technical-Scientific Committee that includes universities and research centers such as the University of Foggia and the Polytechnic University of Bari. In addition to promoting the circular economy, the startup provides consulting for green economy projects and is expanding its impact with an industrial scale-up program, which involves installing pilot plants to test the technology on a larger scale.
Innovative technologies: citrus waste as chemical reagents
At the heart of AraBat’s innovation is its green hydrometallurgical process, which uses citrus waste as chemical reagents. Citric acid, found in abundance in lemons and oranges, replaces traditional inorganic acids, providing a reduced environmental impact. Orange peels, dried and pulverized, play a key role: during the process, the cellulose it contains is converted into sugars that improve the extraction of precious metals such as lithium, cobalt, manganese and nickel.
This approach offers multiple benefits ranging from the reduction of dioxins and elimination of toxic reagents to the production of high-purity secondary raw materials that can be resold at competitive prices. Not to mention the social benefits of promoting a sustainable and inclusive production model.
AraBat’s process returns materials such as lithium carbonate and cobalt hydroxide, which are used in numerous industries, from the production of new batteries to the pharmaceutical and metallurgical industries. This technology not only reduces waste, but turns it into a valuable resource, creating value for the environment and the economy.

AraBat represents a concrete model of circular economy, in which waste becomes a resource and technological innovation translates into environmental and industrial benefits.
